About the event
What is Marathon Mates?
Marathon Mates is RNIB's brand-new virtual running event. Pair up with a pal and sign up to run the distance of a marathon between you during the month of September. Whether you’re miles away or side-by-side, split the distance however you like and support each other from start to end.
Money raised through Marathon Mates will help break down barriers for the two million people in the UK with sight loss.
How do I take part?
It’s really easy to join our Marathon Mates team. Complete your registration by setting up your fundraising page on JustGiving. Then create a team page for you and your buddy and send them a link so they can join too.
How do I link my fundraising page with my partner?
Because there are two of you taking part in Marathon Mates, you both need to set up individual JustGiving pages. In order to keep track of how much you’ve both raised, one of you will need to create a team page. Here’s how:
- See if you’re already part of a team by checking the team info underneath your page name on your own JustGiving page
- If you can see a team name then you’re all sorted! If you can see a link to ‘Create a Team’ then you’re not in a team
- Before creating a new team page, just double check that your buddy hasn’t already created one! Search their name on JustGiving and check if they have a team name under their page name
- If they have a team name, click the link and follow the prompts to join their team. If they don’t have a team name then neither of you are in a team and you’ll need to create one
- Back on your page, click ‘Create a Team’ and follow the instructions to complete your team and send your buddy a link to join! If they haven’t set up their fundraising page yet, they’ll be prompted to do so before joining your team
Is there a registration fee?
Registration is free. There’s no fee to sign up for Marathon Mates.
Do I have to run?
The best part about Marathon Mates is that how you take part is totally up to you. Split the distance however you like and run, walk, jog or skip to reach your target by the end of September.
Can I take part with my child?
If you want to pair up with someone under the age of 18, just register yourself by setting up your fundraising page and make a note in your page description about who you’re taking part with. You’ll be our main point of contact for the team and all communications will be sent to you.
I don’t have a buddy yet - can I still register?
Yes! Don’t worry if you haven’t found a friend to join you just yet. You can register for Marathon Mates and set up your fundraising page now, and then send your partner the link to register once they’ve confirmed they want to join you.
What if my buddy or I can no longer take part?
We understand this happens and life gets in the way. If you can find a replacement partner, just ask them to register and invite them to join your team page.
I usually run with a guide, but we can't meet up right now - can I still take part?
Of course you can. We recognise that this is a challenge right now due to social distancing rules. If you don’t have anyone in your household you can run with, why not take on Marathon Mates as a walking challenge instead? Or if you are lucky enough to have a treadmill, you could do your share at home.
How much do I have to raise?
We’re asking that each pair pledges to raise a combined total of £150 for RNIB. We’ll be here to support you every step of the way to make sure you absolutely smash your target. You can contact us at any time if you need extra support by emailing [email protected].
How do I pay in my sponsorship?
As part of your registration, you and your buddy will be prompted to set up fundraising pages. Any donations made to your pages will come to us automatically so you don’t need to worry about sending them in.
Can I fundraise offline?
As part of your registration for Marathon Mates, a JustGiving page will be created. We recommend using this to collect your sponsorship. With the current guidance around social distancing, we wouldn’t recommend collecting cash from friends or family and it’s also more difficult for us to process cheques right now.
If you have any issues fundraising online, let us know by emailing [email protected] and we can find a solution for you.
Tracking your miles
How do I connect my tracking device?
It’s really easy to link your fundraising page to the fitness tracking app Strava. Just follow the steps below:
- Log in to your JustGiving account and view your fundraising page
- Scroll down and select the ‘Connect Strava’ button
- Log in or register with Strava (it’s free!)
- Confirm some Strava permissions, select the type of activities you want to show and save your fitness settings and preferences
You'll now be able to post your Strava activity to your JustGiving page.
I don’t have a smartphone - can I still take part?
Of course - just manually add your miles as updates on your JustGiving page to track your progress.
What if I forget to track my miles?
Don’t worry if you forget to track your miles. You can just log them as updates on your JustGiving page to track your progress.
Training and support
How do I train for Marathon Mates?
The best part about Marathon Mates is that anyone can join regardless of fitness level - you can make it work for you. If you do have any medical conditions, please do speak to your GP before registering to make sure you’re OK to take part.
We’ll be sending you training tips and ideas in the run-up to the event so you’ll be all set to smash your target come September.
What support can I expect from RNIB?
Our friendly events team will be there every step of the way to support you. We’ll make sure you’re fully prepared for Marathon Mates, help you raise as much money as possible and make sure you have a great experience.
Once you’re signed up, we’ll be in regular contact with expert fundraising and training advice, giving you all the inspiration you need to smash your personal and fundraising goals.
You can contact the team by emailing [email protected].
Do I get anything for taking part in Marathon Mates?
If you and your buddy meet your joint fundraising target of £150, you’ll each get your very own Marathon Mates finishers' medal to celebrate your achievement.
